A heartfelt Welcome

For your pleasure, here are some wise words to take with you on your journey around my gallery.

Most people know about the myth of Narcissus, a beautiful young man who each day contemplates his own beauty reflected on the water of a nearby lake. He becomes so infatuated with his own reflection that he ultimately falls asleep and drowns. On the very spot he fell into the water, a flower grew out of the soil, which was thus given the name Narcissus.
However, this not the way Oscar Wilde ends his version of the story.
He writes that when Narcissus died, the forest nymphs came upon the lake to find the clear waters were transformed into pool of salty tears.

"Why are you crying?" enquired the forest nymphs.
"I'm crying over the loss of Narcissus," said the lake.

"Oh, we’re not surprised you’re crying over Narcissus," they continued, "because even though we often chased him through the forest, you were the only one who could gaze upon his beauty face to face."

"But was Narcissus beautiful?" asked the lake.
"Who should know that better than you?" exclaimed the nymphs in surprise. “It was on your shores he kneeled each day!”

The lake was silent for some moments and then it said,
"I'm crying for Narcissus, but I never knew he was so beautiful. I’m crying because every time he kneeled at my shores I could see my own beauty in his eyes."

A beautiful story – from the prologue in Paul Coelho’s book, "The Alchemist".
